What is Primary Care?

Primay Care is performed and managed by a personal physician often collaborating with other health professionals, and utilizing consultation or referral as appropriate. Primary care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses in a variety of health care settings. Primary care promotes effective communication with patients and encourages the role of the patient as a partner in health care.

What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care, routine check ups and medical advice for the individual and family. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, from infancy to adulthood, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

What is an Internist?

These primary care physicians specialize in adult internal medicine, specifically the diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment of diseases and disorders of all internal organs. This includes comprehensive physical exams, health screenings, diabetes monitoring, cholesterol management and more. An internist provides long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex illness of adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Referrals to other specialist such as cardiologists and neurologists are coordinated whenever necessary.

Do I Need an Ob/Gyn?

Obstetrics and gynecology (Ob/Gyn) is a specialized branch of medicine that provides care for women before, during and after pregnancy, and at menopause. Ob/Gyn physicians specialize in all facets of women’s health, including routine gynecological exams and surgical procedures as well as the medical and surgical treatment of the female reproductive and urinary systems.

Gynecologists specialize in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive organs but typically do not provide birthing services.
